Parvo

My adorable puppy has this. She got diagnosed this morning at the vet.

If you don't know what it is -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_parvovirus

The vet said she probably wouldn't eat today. She ate and drank water and kept it down already. This is apparently a good sign. Yay. However it's not a guarantee of recovery. Ugh.

Quick summary for those who don't know what it is (my parents didn't know, so I'm guessing quite a few other people don't either):

-Parvo affects the gastrointestinal parts of a dog. Basically, digestive parts. Because of this, the dog will stop eating and drinking. The virus itself doesn't kill the dog. It's the symptoms that do. To deal with the illness, treat the symptoms.
-If the symptoms don't drastically improve after 4-5 days of treatment, it's a lost cause.
-Parvo never actually goes away. It's like the dog version of AIDS. After this initial wave of stomach problems, the dog's immune system will be severely weakened and their general energy levels may be lower.
-Also the dog has to be fixed. This is because it makes pregnancy very dangerous for both the dog and the puppies, since parvo can be passed down through genes.

Normally I'm against fixing animals, but I think in this case it's a good thing. I just hope it doesn't hurt her...

We were told Akira has a 50/50 chance of surviving. She seems to be determined to survive. I think she understands what she needs to do. Just eat and drink and the problem will go away. Well, not go away. But it'll be easier to deal with.

What made today even worse was that the neighbor said if his dog gets parvo (it's contagious - through bodily fluids), he's going to shoot our dog. Oh and the fiance's cousin said if he sees our cat he's going to shoot him (the cat). He apologized afterwards but it was still like... dude, my dog may not survive the next week so now you want to threaten the life of my OTHER animal? Oh wait... he's not my kitten anymore because we were forced to give him away!

God I've been crying all day.

Sorry about how terrible this post is.

I just need to vent somewhere.

I don't think either of them will actually do it. The neighbor gave us a nice, big kennel for her. She needs to be contained and she has plenty of space and she's still inside so... yay!

I just want everything to be okay....

How is everyone else?

  1. Your neighbor is probably just scared, even if that doesn't excuse threats against a sick pet. If your dog pulls through, this is a formula my boyfriend and I gave a two year old with parvo we took care of from his mother's rescue: http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item00544/Life-Extension-Dog-Mix-pet-vitamins.html. The supplement isn't specific to parvo but it's good nutrient support to balance digestion and boost the immune system. We're kind of poor and maybe used one scoop every other day, but it was enough to perk up the mutt. Maybe it can help you. Fingers crossed for you and your puppy.

  2. Oh darling, that's so horrible. Give your poor little puppy a hug from me. I really hope she's okay, she sounds like a fighter.
    Take care.
